OPINION: THE IMPLICATION OF EXTENSION OF SERVICE AS PRACTICED IN ABIA CIVIL SERVICE AND THE TIMELINESS OF THE GOVERNOR'S INTERVENTION.

By Paul Kalu

To a layman's understanding, Extension of Service by Civil servants is a situation whereby a public servant due for retirement gets an approval to continue in service for more years. During which he might get extra promotions and more working years.

Adversely, his continued stay in service leads to stagnant growth in cadre for junior officers of the service, increased unemployment rate and economic waste for the government.

By stopping extension of service and showing the exit door to many on extension, the Governor will be creating more employment opportunities.

Also, the Governor by this decision will be creating opportunity for growth in cadre for junior public officers.

Also the Governor will be saving the state a lot of resources spent in carrying the heavy salaries of these senior officers on service extension and also their high pension. For instance a public servant who retires as a Permanent Secretary is supposes to receive as pension about the same amount he was receiving as salary while in service. This explains while many of our civil servants supports the fraud called  extension of service to enable them get to the level of a Permanent Secretary and above before retirement.

By stopping service extension and the application of contributory pension scheme earlier introduced by the Governor, in the nearest future pensioners will not be worried again as their pension will drop on their account as at when due from the pension managers and not from the state again. And issues of pension arrears would become a thing of the past.

Let's support the Governor to carry out all the needed reforms in the civil service system and our MDAs, Parastatals and every Arm of the  government and return Abia to the glory path.
